Adding some glamour…

glam·our/ˈglamər/Noun The attractive/exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing or special.

Lighting is one of them. Lighting fixtures are very important in a home,  no matter how intricate or creative the design of a room is, it would not have any value if there is no appealing lighting fixture to complement it. Appropriate & right amount of lighting from a lighting fixture(s) can help in improving the appearance of a house.

Guilt mirrors/ elaborate frames, hand blown lamp bases, crystal decanters, these always add a touch of glamour for me in any space.I always find such great finds in the Long street antique arcade then just have to take a visit to Buir & Muir for great classic glassware as well as timeless pieces.

Gold Finish to a desk, very sophisticated, compared to your usual stainless steel look, a design by Hans J. Wegner available from Carl Hansen and Son.

Metallic wallpaper on walls, very effective. Knoll Platner dining table (below) with Frame consisting of vertical steel wire rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods. Top options include clear glass, bronze glass and a variety of marble and veneer finishes, available from Limeline.

These chairs are beautiful as well as elegant; splayed legs with curved backrest. Klismosdeveloped by the ancient Greeks. Perfected by the 5th century bc and popular throughout the 4th century bc. Sadly no original Greek chairs survived into modern times. However, the Greeks left a rich history of sculpture and paintings depicting the chair.

“The 21st century has brought glamour, decoration and ornamentation back into homes. It’s a marriage of disparate styles that finds no contradiction. “

“This unique book of spectacular houses and gardens—whose owners come from the worlds of fashion, music, art, and society”

The Interiors and exteriors are so inspiring, both classic and modern, giving us an intimate view into their homes.

“This is the perfect book for anyone looking for new and creative ways to decorate their homes, inspiring readers to add an element of the unexpected to their homes. “

Kelly Wearstlers combination of all the corals and metalics, blends so well with her background fabric by Lee Jofacontact St Leger & Viney.

Diffuser bottles, I spotted a few gorgeous options at Dominico Interiors, and last but not least the timeless yet iconic Arco lamp, to think my father used to have on in his bachelor pad but sadly gave away when he was younger, paired with Knoll Bertoia Side chairs (which he has kept, all i need now is to have the seat cushion redone and perhaps rechrome the chairs.

The Baobab collection created in Tanzania, produced in Belgium, 8 exclusive colours each with a selective fragrance. Every piece is handmade and each vase is blown piece by piece. You can Choose from a selection of different fragrances, available from Wunders La maison

The Devil wears Prada, i think any woman wouldn’t mind a wardrobe selection like their fashion cupboard in the movie, and whenever i think of this movie, all i can hear is Vogue by Madonna…..!!! Framed pictured, such a great focal point in a room.

Crisp linens, deep buttoned scroll bed.  Many people are good at combining one pattern with a solid but are afraid of adding more. Yet, adding even one more colour/print or pattern can make all the difference between a so-so room and one that is interesting, polished, and pulled together.

Ralph Lauren interiors and accessories very elegant and tasteful.  Adding a Venetian mirror, always a beautiful accessory in a room, Delos in Cape Town has some exquisite options. Another great addition to glamourise a room is wall mouldings, NMC has a great selection from ceiling roses, cornices, skirting boards, all made from high density Polystyrene/imitation wood Polystyrene.

anything you can place your coffee or feet on…

I Just love this tray, we had a poster at work once, that someone gave us, to inspire us. This was taken from the Morale boosting posters that were displayed in Britain during the  2nd World War, formed by the Ministry of Information (which was formed by the British government) they were appointed to design morale boosting posters. the plan was to issue the posters upon invasion of Britain by Germany, which never happened, so was never officially seen by the public, as most of the posters were destroyed.

Plain interiors lend themselves to busy patterned accesories, like this ottoman with inverted skirt seen above, great little pattern, there are some really lovely geometric prints out there, including some of the great classics from David Hicks, Cole & Son, Kravet as well as Highland court and the list goes on.

I just love the subdued lighting in this roomPunch of colour spread throughout this living space, and faux leather deep buttoned ottoman giving this room an edgy feel.

You can never go wrong by investing in some classics, this space lends itself to classic pieces as well as modern pieces. The high gloss floors give this industrial space an edgy clean look.

This coffee table, comes with a swivel glass top which is great functionality wise.

B&B Italia’sThe CANASTA collection designed by Patricia Urquiola, elements with structures in white and black varnished steel and tops in ceramic tiles, with decorations that reproduce the cushions patterns in the shades of white, black, brown, cyclamine-colour and and tourquise.

Classic geometric woven pattern called Vienna Straw seen below. Urquiola has blown it up to a massive scale and used it to wrap round steel structures.

White Duco can transform any dull coffee table to something more appealing.

Moooi, Crema Design has some very funky items, love this rabbit lamp and the pig side table, quirky!!

Sure everyone recognizes this room, Carrie Bradshaws from Sex And the city, love the blue on the walls… this ottoman reminds me of something from Andrew Martin.

My Favourite ….

Okay perhaps a little late, but better late than never. Since it was my Birthday month in April, i thought i would indulge slightly and share some of the things i love…

ARIES – The young ram is adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic and full of energy. The Arian is a pioneer both in thought and action, very open to new ideas and a lover of freedom. They welcome challenges and will not be diverted from their purpose except by their own impatience, which will surface if they don’t get quick results. In your personal relationships Arians are frank, direct and candid, and make enthusiastic and generous friends.

Baci chocolates arrived on the Italian market in 1922, 15 years after the founding of Perugina in Perugia, Italy. Enveloped in dark chocolate, the product contained a chopped hazelnut filling and whole hazelnut centre. The famous Bacio, or “kiss”, was born. Perugina added paper scrolls containing love notes inside the chocolates’ wrappings in the 1930s.

Amor Amor sparkles with seductive vanilla and jasmine scents, fragrant embrace of fruits and scented woods. Created by Cacharel.

Black Orchid fragrance  from designer Tom Ford, notes include black truffle, ylang ylang, bergamot, effervescent citrus, black currant, jasmine, lotus wood, patchouli, incense, vetiver, vanilla, balsam and sandalwood,  it is a statement fragrance. Citrus,  sugar.  Undertone of something earthy and dark.

My favourite colour pallette, yellow & grey. Grey is a great neutral backdrop that gives you the opportunity to change up your pop colors seasonally, and then the greek key symbol, gorgeous!!!

Ahhh ‘The Domino Book’ i have no words, just amazing, decor ideas, great splashes of colour. Mixing of styles of furniture, Louis styled furniture, Bauhaus/ retro you name it and then of course the floor to ceiling bookcase as seen below… i will have this in my house one day…

Crystal is such a beautiful piece of decor, i was once given a crystal decanter as a gift from Le Brocanteur in Cape Town, a beautiful antique furniture store, with unbelievable antique furniture peices from all different eras and countries… since then my appreciation has grown, and  slowly i am starting to increase my collection, then i shall move onto my crystal chandelier.

I have over the years been given some great pieces of jewellery, and have grown to appreciate the different types of golds, rose gold, etc, and now my new love is Pearls, yes i know a bit late, but i always thought of Pearls being a omen of bad luck or something like that, and it just stuck, but a Pearl is a classic peice, something i dont think will ever date, but will always be a statement peice!

“Pearls are amongst the oldest and most universal of all gems. They are the oldest jewels know to man, and the only gem made by a living animal. The oldest surviving pearl necklace is nearly 2000 years old and was found in the sarcophagus of a Persian Princess. In many countries pearls were worn as a declaration of wealth and power, and also used as a talisman to bring good fortune, to ward off evil spirits and to cure illnesses. Pearls were symbolic of purity, chastity and feminine charm.”

As everyone knows, Black is my staple in my wardrobe, i love it as you can add to it and pop with colour or accesories, my new must have item is the gel eyeliner from Bobbi Brown.

Peonies – “The peony is named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius, the Greek God of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil;  Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.”

Jean Paul Gaultier always comes out with such amazing bottles, for his summer fragrances, although we are now in Autumn, i thought i would just add this to the list of items, as his floral notes in all his summer fragrances, get me every time!!!!

“The new editions of the iconic fragrances Classique and Le Male for 2011 bring together the great loves of Jean Paul Gaultier – corsets, sailor stripes and tribal tattoos. Classique Summer 2011 and Le Male Summer 2011 fragrances reflect summer freshness and youthful rebellion. The fragrance opens with orange blossom and rose. The heart of Sambac jasmine and ylang-ylang is placed at the base of fresh musk and vanilla. is a lively floral and romantic fragrance of slightly rebellious nature, attractive like tattoo adorned sun tanned skin. “

The fragrant  aromas of lotus flowers, notes of Sambac jasmine absolute, along with mild, floral-citrusy aromas of orange blossom. Sensual white musk creates a finish and it enriches the intriguing fragrance Jasmin Noir EDT.

François Demachy was inspired by the black tea extract during his journey in India. The fragrance, Escale à Pondichéry, is rich in natural essences : Cardamon essence, Sandalwood essence and Jasmine Sambac absolute. Classic and elegant, the bottle  is decorated with the signature embossed canework of Christian Dior Couture.

India Hicks – Island Night by Crabtree & Evelyn – Fragrance: Purple and white orchids, night-blooming jasmine, green island palms and orange blossom nectar entwined with a soft woody musk accord.

Pastel hues these remind me of Ravioli peices

Selecting a wallcovering can be a little more tricky than expected, with so many finishes, techniques, wallpaper ranges, tiles that look like curtains, your options are really limitless.

“This stunning hand-glazed tile by Italian company La fabbrica.  The Jewel tiles combine the raw and  refined; these terracotta tiles feature a rustic tumbled style that is meant to look worn and weathered, with a hand-glazed finish that will add a touch of glamour to any room. These rectangular tiles are just 2.2mm thick, wall application is easy. Choose from a variety of finishes, including platinum, gold, pearl and black. “

Replacing the paper with a non-woven membrane, not only is the wallcovering much stronger; wallpapering has never been easier. Smartpaper that has been correctly pasted is easy to remove by simply pulling the dry Smartpaper by hand from the wall.

Porch decor ideas

A Friend of mine In Bergamo, Italy asked me for some advice for her porch, of which i am dying to visit the next time i am there, because your space is quite small and you have the most unbelievable views i would opt to stay away from building up your wall.

First thing to remove is the Afroturf and as you said burn it! Start from scratch, you can either lay wooden planks down to give it more texture, Balau/Ipe/Bamboo try suppliers Stable MarketingForest Flooring or Decking wood tiles that snap into place/ composite wooden flooring/ tiles that look like wood or you could try paving stones if you want a more rustic feel outside otherwise gravel stones combined with rough tiles (for better grip and less likely you will slip) place them as a pathway or around the surrounding area.

Trellis work is another great idea, hides any imperfect walls/rough plaster work. Attaching several lattice trellises to the exterior portion of the porch allows for privacy and a place for vines or climbing roses to grow. You can find manufactured lattice trellises at building supply centers, local department stores or garden centers. Lattice trellises come in many shapes and sizes. Choose plants according to zone hardiness and local soil conditions. Train plants to climb up trellises by gently attaching them with string.

Lanterns, i just love them, all about the layering in this image, great idea with the Plantation shutters, creating an interest, instead of a bland and plain white wall. For similar look and more try, Plantation Shutter company. Hadeda has a great selection of lantens. Try Moroccan Warehouse for the floor scatters as well as coffee tables, Gonsenhausers for the Rug.

Curtains soften a splace, and block out harsh daylight, great place to draw the curtains slightly and have a nice nap. Home Fabrics have a great range of block out fabrics.

Regarding furniture, you should either opt for wood that will age nicely by being exposed to the elements ie Teak/Balau wood etc… or the synthetic wicker/cane variety, but there are some great options out there, alternatively on the smaller side, you can layer with scatter cushions, covered in outdoor fabrics, such as Sunbrella from Kravett available from St Leger & Viney or DicksonPerennials, available from Mavromac, to name a few, local fabric houses stock a range or two of great striped/floral/plain fabrics, from colourful to neutral tones, suitable for all applications.

Clever use of plantation, hiding the unsightly buildings, creating your own little private area. Create an interest rather than looking onto a bland wall of another building. For similar furniture, try MBM, or Cane Time.

For a great selection in ceiling fans, contact Solent Fans, or Sky fans

Finding the perfect Sofa

Selecting a sofa, involves a lot more than you think, all about the comfort: seat cushion: foam, down. Base: springs/webbing? Height of the seat base depth of the seat? Fringe, inverted pleat/box pleat, studs no studs, turned legs/ tapered legs, stain/ paint effect on wood or castors…

Certain arms and backs suggest  modern or traditional styles.  From the classical/traditional style to the more contemporary one, but the way a sofa is upholstered and trimmed can also influence its appeal. I have selected a few styles i love, there are so many, its hard to pick my best
